La brachiterapia, chiamata anche radioterapia interna, è un metodo di trattamento del cancro in cui vengono iniettate capsule con materiale radioattivo nel corpo. Questo metodo di trattamento riduce l'effetto delle radiazioni sui tessuti e sugli organi circostanti, in contrasto con le radiazioni esterne, quando non solo il tumore è esposto alle radiazioni.La brachiterapia viene eseguita nel regime di dosi alte o basse, quando i radioisotopi vengono somministrati temporaneamente o continuamente (in quest'ultimo caso, le sostanze radioattive perdono la loro attività). Il tipo di trattamento utilizzato dipende dal tipo di tumore e dalle caratteristiche di ogni singolo paziente.
